Cool Papa J represents a lifelong journey through a diverse range of musical genres, evolving from the era of 78s to LPs, 45s, cassettes, CDs, streaming; influenced by the Big Bands and rock legends like Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young, Chicago, and notable trumpet players such as Herb Albert, Maynard Ferguson, Chuck Mangione & Freddie Hubbard. My musical journey began with trumpet playing during school years, and sometime later extended to picking up the bass guitar. Despite a hiatus of over thirty five years, the allure of music remained a constant in my daily thoughts and dreams. Prompted by a family member, I resumed playing, channeling a lifetime of musical ideas into the creation, writing, and recording of songs for this album.
First and foremost, a special heartfelt thank you to my amazing wife Terry, who is the inspiration for many of my songs. Her unwavering love, endless patience, critical insights, and not to mention her smooth backing vocals truly made this project all worthwhile. “ Honey…You Are the Angel in my Dreams”.
I extend thanks to all the musicians, family and friends who contributed to this project, making it an exceptional and fulfilling experience. My son Frankie, on drums, was the driving force and heartbeat of every song. Ryan, my musical little brother, played a pivotal role in translating my ideas and progressions into a foundation for every song on rhythm guitar. Arya, my grand nephew, for displaying his exceptional rock vocals and lead guitar on two of the album tracks elevating the music to new heights with his virtuosic solos. My son JP, who with his cool lead vocals on “Gonna Make You Mine (Girl)” and acoustic guitar playing on other tracks. Additionally the harmonious contributions of Eliya and my daughter Dianna on backing vocals enriching the albums soulful essence. Gratitude extended to Papa Bobby, Uncle Robert, & Uncle Jim for their contribution on "Carmelita Bonita". Last but not least, Tim from Mountain Dog Musicworks deserves profound acknowledgement for his expertise, guidance and musical contributions, crucial in bringing the project to life. Your support has been invaluable, Brother.
All that said, this is the story of Cool Papa J, a culmination of dreams turned reality. I hope you all dig this creation of music as much as we did creating it.
This album is dedicated to the loving memories of my mother, Serafina, and my mother-in-law Carmela. “God only knows where I would be without the love and guidance of these two women in my life, 'Vai con Dio… Vaya con Dios… til' we meet again'."
Peace, John O
